- I currently reduce food waste by only buying what I need within a few day time frame instead of over buying, or bulk buying. It has helped me maintain less food waste.
- One thing I want to try at home that I’ve done a few times but can increase my use of using “scrapes” to make meals
- I currently participate in my cities’ green bin composting program!
- I want to the broccoli stem recipe that use parts of veggies that I would normally compost
1.To avoid food waste, I only buy the exact amount of food that I need and If I have any leftovers, I freeze them and use them to prepare another meal.
2. I would like to try making compost for my garden.
I currently reduce food waste through proper storage of all fruits and vegetables, mainly through washing and pre-cutting vegetables that I know I may forget and this encourages me to have a healthy snack always available. This helps me to consume my perishable produce before it goes bad. I also make a habit of making a weekly stir fry type of dish with leftover produce that might not be the freshest for salads but goes well in a cooked stir fry dish.
I would like to try making my own vegetable broth and saving my vegetable food scraps as a way to reduce waste and get creative in my own kitchen. I also want to try pickling vegetables as a way to cut costs as purchasing premade jars can be expensive.
These are great ideas! Thank you for sharing, I love making soup stock from leftover veggie parts.
I currently reduce food waste in my home by making more frequent, smaller shopping trips and only buying for a few meals at a time.
I will definitely use the tips on use and sell by dates, as well as best food storage practices for different produce. I especially liked the ideas for the broccoli stems.
- One way we try to reduce food waste in our home is taking leftover food we have cooked prior, and try to make something else out of it.
- Something I would like to try at home would be making my own vegetable stock.
- One way I reduce food waste in my home is by not cooking so much food that there is leftovers. Whenever we have leftovers, my family and I say we will eventually eat them throughout the week. However, the leftovers always end up in the refrigerator for a week or two which then get bad and become inedible. This is why now I cook smaller portions, only what my family will eat that day.
- One thing I would like to try at home from the curriculum is saving the scraps from my vegetables that I cut up in order to make a vegetable salad or broth.
I started a composting “HUB” with our local composting company. One locked bin, six houses. I also clear out the fridge before buying more food (sometimes its challenging, but I love a challenge!)
My take away from video is that I want to start making my own Vegetable Broth
Questions:
- I compost my food products.
- Pickling onions!
- I used to notice that fruits I would buy would go bad before I had the chance to consume them, so I have started freezing them to use in my morning smoothies. This has not only helped me avoid food waste, but it helps me consume more fruits!
- I am very curious about the vegetable broth using scraps and I can’t wait to try it.
- I keep a list on the fridge of leftovers to be used up so we don’t forget about them. I also do a quick inventory of what food we have on hand before I go grocery shopping.
- I plan to stop looking for the “cosmetically perfect” fruits and vegetables and buy the ones that aren’t perfect instead. Also, label everything before putting it in the freezer.
- To reduce food waste my family compost. We have bins that we have created at home, and we use it for our gardens. We make sure to separate our items and to help not throw so much food out.
- I had not thought abouts using scraps for anything else other than compost. But I think something I would want to try to do is instead. Maybe finding ways to use other things. I think the herb making would be good because that’s something that can be easily incorporated into the cooking that we do. We always need spices and herbes so that would be a fun to include
- I love to preserve foods by either fermenting, dehydrating, or jamming. There are so many creative ways to make food last longer. Any tidbits that rot go into my worm bin.
- I always make chicken broth, but I’ve forgotten that veggie leftovers can become broth. It’s now on my checklist!
Currently, I have chosen to use the items that I have at home as ingredients in a meal I am preparing for the week. Instead of meal prepping a new meal, I will base my meal on what I already have.
From the curriculum, I would like to try try pickling red onions, and making the chia jam.
- In my home I practice freezing sauces, stocks, fresh fruit and veggies to preserve them for longer periods.
- I would like to try to organize my fridge to better accommodate the specific temperature needs of all my produce. And I’m starting to compose at home.
I am reducing waste in my home, by buying less produce, during my grocery shopping day.
I would like to try composting my kitchen scraps.
- I buy small portions so I have less waste and I compost at home.
- I just made the chocolate pudding with avacado that was over ripe.
- I make my food for a certain number of days; what I have left over I use it for another meal
- I would like use food scraps as a compose for my plants that I have
I currently reduce food waste by learning to prepare smaller portion sizes and buying foods that I can incorporate across all meals like tomatoes, rice and eggs.
