July Virtual Summit: Farmers Markets

This space is all about activating farmers markets. Whether you’ve helped launch a market, offer education at markets, or improved access with CalFresh/EBT, we want to hear from you.

Consider sharing:

  • How your market has improved food access
  • Vendor recruitment or retention tips
  • Partnerships with local organizations or schools
  • Community feedback you’ve received and how you’ve adapted

Good morning! We work with college campuses throughout the state through CalFresh Outreach and CFHL. We encourage campuses to share the Market Match info with students. Many of our campuses partner with their local FM to encourage students to use their EBT dollars to purchase local healthy food. Student teams provide tours for students to learn more about what they can buy and how it works. We have learned that it is important to let the local market know that there is a student promotion happening. Peer to peer marketing and social media posts let students know how to stretch their money while at the market and provide recipes for unfamiliar ingredients.

Good Morning!
Please help the farmers have a plan for their produce after the market closes.
There might be an opportunity for a local non profit to come as they are closing to pick up any produce they didn’t sell to put into their markets & pantries. The agency can give them a donation receipt for the poundage for tax purposes.
It’s basically a win-win for everyone -

  1. The farmers don’t have to take their produce back, donates to a market & gets a tax write off
  2. The agency will get local, organic produce to stock their shelves using volunteers at little cost
This volunteer run program has, in 10 years, given to our market over 1 MILLION pounds of produce.
