How to store food in the refrigeratorFSWR: Personal Reflection Activity
- I currently freeze fruit and vegetables when they are towards the end of their life! It is perfect for soups and smoothies I make for my family.
- I will be trying to compost!
-
I follow FIFO which is first in first out to make sure I eat the foods I brought 1st. And I create a list before I go shopping and try to stick to the amounts on the list. We also use a lot of leftovers as compost rather than trash.
-
Leftovers and broth. We don’t make broth generally out of scraps generally compost.
- I have been using my vegetable scraps to make vegetable stock instead of throwing them out. I have also been freezing fruits before they go bad for smoothies.
- I would like to try to make compost at home.
In what ways do you currently reduce food waste in your home?
I use some waste for my plants and buy only the food I will use in my planning for the week.
What would you like to try at home from the curriculum?
Using the waste from my vegetables to make a soup.
One way I reduce food waste is by trying to reinvigorate my wilted fruits or vegetables by placing them in cold water. I would like to try to reuse glass or plastic containers more often.
- Buy only what I need or will make the next few days, especially Mon-Thurs when I’m mostly likely to cook.
- I’d like to try the activity that allows people to assess there waste and identify where it could go or ways to reduce it.
One way i reduce food waste is by purchasing only what i need for the week. I do this by meal planning so that i know exactly what i need.
I would like to try pickling more vegetables.
take extra food and make a new meal to eat the next day.
I waste a lot of food and haven’t found something that worked well. Since I live alone, I would like to grocery shop with a friend that I can divide large packages with.
- I freeze fruit that I may not have time to eat before and use for smoothies.
- I would like to try composting.
- What is one way that you currently reduce food waste in your home?
- What is one thing you’d like to try at home from the curriculum?
-I only buy what I need for food or I freeze fruits or vegetables that ripen very quickly, like bananas or strawberries.
-I would like to learn more about compost and teach the participants.
- I ensure I prep and store foods where they could last longest (in fridge or freezer). I also keep note of how much longer after the ‘sell by’ date a food item could be used and eaten.
- I could like to try making a soup from vegetable leftovers or scraps.
- I plan out what I need for the week rather than buy a bunch of produce I think I will use and never end up and then going to waste.
- At home composting would be the goal. Really utilizing the compost bin for all food scraps, instead of throwing them in the trash.
-
One way I currently reduce food waste is planning meals that use similar ingredients so that I’m not wasting of throwing out any food. I also like to save my food scraps to make things like vegetable broth. I’m hoping to start a compost bin next spring so that I can take some of that leftover food waste and use it in my garden.
-
I would like to try using the parts of the vegetable I normally discard (broccoli stems, carrot tops, etc.) in different recipes.
- I reduce food waste by meal prepping/planning, composting, and freezing foods that may spoil quickly such as berries.
- I would like to make vegetable stock with the veggie scraps.
- I get most of my fruits and vegetables from my mother, who works for a produce distributor. When I have too many items, I share with my neighbors or my in-laws, or I take it to a local food pantry that has a refrigerator that can be accessed 24/7.
- I would love to start making broth with my scraps. I will be renovating my garden soon, so I would like to start composting once that is done.
One way I am currently reducing food waste in my home is by freezing fruit or veggies that are about to spoil and using them for smoothies or stir-fries! If I am unable to use my fresh fruit I compost whenever possible.
From the curriculum, I learned that there is produce I am not storing properly and I am now aware of that. Thus, from this training, I am taking away with me knowledge on how to avoid food spoilage and properly clean and store my produce.

Two ways I reduce food waste in my home are using veggie scraps to make veggie broth and meal plan for the week. I usually buy a lot of onions, carrots, brussels sprouts and bell peppers. I made the veggie stock twice now and both times it came out really delicious! I love to use it in my chicken noodle soup and veggie risotto. Planning meals out for the week helps with keeping costs down and eliminates the “honey, what’s for dinner” question lol.

I want to try the broccoli stem salad and some of the other preservation recipes like jams in my home. I also want to create informational worksheets and activities on food waste for my pantry clients!
I grow my own food, compost, and use food scraps to make broth.
